Notice Creates Mechanism for Expansion
September 9, 2005
Wayne, PA— With the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Notice issued yesterday (FR Vol. 70, No. 201, pages 60870-60874), Traffic.com, Inc., a leading provider of accurate, real-time traffic information in the United States, is recognized as the lead Consortium partner that will continue to carry out its existing contract under the Federal Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure Program (ITIP).
Under the ITIP legislation, Traffic.com® is creating 27 interoperable systems of digital traffic sensors in major metropolitan areas across the country to provide comprehensive, real-time traffic information. Traffic.com funds the equipment, maintenance, and ongoing operational expenses for the system in each participating metropolitan area and offers DOTs traffic data at a low-risk, fixed price. The partnership requires no maintenance and operating payments from the agency, provides innovative applications to use the data, and creates the opportunity to expand the system using commercial revenue.
The sensors currently generate real time and archived traffic information in the following city markets: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Providence, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Louis, Tampa, and Washington DC. Sensor systems are currently under design and construction in Baltimore, Detroit, Oklahoma City, and Seattle.
The ITIP program provides $2 million worth of data services to each participating DOT, conditioned on an additional $500,000 of non-federal matching funds. Today’s Notice clarifies that $22 million remains for 11 more cities to participate in Part I of the program that is being carried out by Traffic.com. Las Vegas, Miami, New York/Northern New Jersey, Orlando, and Salt Lake City are listed as Group A cities, indicating that they will be given preference to participate as one of the 11 remaining cities, provided they are under contract by February 6, 2006. Cities listed in Groups B and C that are interested need to send a letter of interest to the FHWA by February 6, 2006. Selection will then be based on Texas Transportation Institute congestion rankings. Group B and C cities are Albany, Atlanta, Austin, Birmingham, Burlington, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, Greensboro, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Louisville, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Nashville, New Orleans, Norfolk, Portland, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, Sacramento, San Jose, Tucson, and Tulsa.
A new Part II expansion of the program provides funding for three additional metropolitan areas and creates a competitive process to choose qualified companies for this expansion of the program. “Traffic.com looks forward to actively participating in the Part II expansion process,” said David L. Jannetta, president of Traffic.com. “With the foundation of successful partnerships built upon a proven model, we are excited about fulfilling the complete deployment as defined by the current program and working with new DOT partners throughout the Part II expansion.”
